Did the SK8 the Infinity Finale Queerbait Us?

The original skateboarding shounen anime SK8 the Infinity was one of our favorites of the Winter 2021 season. Its colorful and immaculately detailed art direction, over-the-top depictions of underground skating tournaments, and lovable cast of characters gave it a unique style that we couldn’t get enough of. But above all else, the heartwarming relationship between main characters Reki and Langa kept us coming back week after week to see if these two adorable idiots would ever realize that they’re meant for each other. Unfortunately, though, the series ended without any declaration of love in sight. Did we just get queerbaited again? Let’s take a closer look at the situation to see what exactly happened here.

5 Anime Characters Who Kicked Gender Norms to the Curb

For LGBT folks and anyone else who doesn’t fit into traditional gender norms, the world of anime is a much more welcoming place than Western media (not that there was a very high bar to beat). Still, it’s rare to find a character who isn’t written as a joke and lives their best life without caring if they fit society’s definition of how they “should” look or act. Today, we’ll be showcasing five of our favorite anime characters who kick gender norms to the curb!

Adachi to Shimamura (Adachi and Shimamura) Mid-Season Impressions – Schoolgirl Lesbians Who Are Actually Lesbians!

Japanese media tends to portray homosexual relationships as sweet and caring, but ultimately not that serious – especially once the lovebirds get old enough to graduate into “real” relationships with the opposite sex (see Hibike Euphonium, Aria, and Shin Sekai Yori). However, some newer anime are trying to change that, such as Fall 2018’s Bloom Into You and, of course, Fall 2020’s Adachi and Shimamura. Let’s check out how this tale of awkward schoolgirl lesbian romance is going so far!

[Honey’s Anime Interview] Sewn Together Reflections, the Intrepid Writing and Cosplaying Duo!

Briana Lawrence (Brichibi Cosplays) and Jessica Walsh (SnowCosplays) are a cosplaying and writing couple known as Sewn Together Reflections. Briana is perhaps best known for her magical girl novel/comic hybrid MagnifiqueNOIR, which had its second book release recently, and Jessica spends much of her time creating cosplays to flatter all figures. They’re also freelance non-fiction writers as well as advocates for diversity in media and self-esteem with cosplay. We caught up with Briana and Jessica at Ohayocon 2020 to discuss how they met, how they get inspired, and much more!

[Fujoshi Friday] What a Fujoshi Sees: JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 5: Ougon no Kaze (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)

Frankly, it doesn’t take a dedicated fujoshi to see the gayness in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. LGBT groups have loved the series for decades, and it has a smattering of canonically gay or bisexual characters already (namely Dio, Gelato & Sorbet, Squalo & Tiziano, Scarlet Valentine, and, arguably, Caesar). But Golden Wind stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to gay subtext, especially because most of it happens between the fabulously dressed main characters.

How Gay Are the Characters from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Really? – Part 2: Golden Wind to Jojolion

Last time, we explored the queer subtext in the first four parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Very few characters have been confirmed as LGBT, but there’s enough evidence in the text itself to imply that many others lie somewhere on the spectrum. This time, we’re focusing on parts 5 through 8 to see which characters could possibly be gay based on their personalities and interactions with their peers. Come join us!
