Despite its rather high barrier to entry (all-CG animation, anthropomorphic animal characters, Netflix exclusive, etc.), the first season of Beastars exceeded expectations and garnered a sufficient fan following. That’s because, once you look past the initial oddness, you’ll find a deeply intriguing story about good people just trying to live in a fundamentally hostile world. But does season 2 live up to the demographic-shaking appeal of its predecessor? Let’s see!
The Winter 2021 anime season is boiling over with great characters, both old and new. Many of them have rightfully soared in popularity online, like the plucky spider Kumoko and the adult version of Eren Yeager, but others (especially those in supporting roles) have fallen by the wayside. Tensions are at an all-time high in the world of Beastars, thanks to an incident in the drama club where Tao the panther accidentally rips off Kibi the anteater’s arm during practice. Since the still-unsolved devouring incident also happened in the drama club, this sends Cherryton School into high alert and it’s decided that carnivores and herbivores will be in different classes starting next year and all mixed clubs will be suspended indefinitely. This causes an uproar among the students, with many strong opinions on both sides of the issue. Let’s examine the reality of the situation and see which side has the stronger case – can carnivores and herbivores really live together in peace?
This all-CGI anthropomorphic animal anime was a hard sell for many fans, but those who gave it a chance back in Fall 2019 (or 2020, when it aired on Netflix) discovered that both its animation and storytelling are surprisingly brilliant.
Season 1 set up a world where herbivores and carnivores live together in an outwardly peaceful relationship, but a devouring incident at Cherryton High School brings everyone’s attention to how shaky this arrangement’s foundation actually is. Three students from the school handle the fallout in their own ways: shy wolf Legosi questions his place in society as a carnivore, beleaguered rabbit Haru tries to leverage other animals’ lust for her to take control of her life, and serious deer Louis fashions himself into a hero to protect the weak. BEASTARS Second Season is well underway now, so let’s take a gander at how everyone is holding up after the chaos that was the first season’s ending!
