The Winter 2021 anime season had some truly outstanding shows, but unfortunately, not all of the anime we were looking forward to watching lived up to our expectations. Solid narratives that rushed themselves towards the end, shaky adaptations of far superior source material, inexperienced or overworked studios biting off more than they can chew... for any number of reasons (some of which definitely had to do with the pandemic delaying or canceling many anime from last year), this season just wasn’t as solid as it could’ve been. Here are five Winter 2021 anime that didn’t quite hit the mark.
The first season of The Promised Neverland was lauded as an instant classic back when it came out in Winter 2019 – its blend of psychological horror and Death Note-style thriller elements made it a joy to watch week to week and the intriguing setting had viewers wondering what could possibly be lurking outside of Grace Field House. Now that the second season is well underway, though, some fans are wishing that the outside world had remained a mystery. When Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) first aired in the Winter 2019 season, it was praised for its shockingly dark premise and thrilling prison break storyline. Now, two years later, we pick up where we left off as the Grace Field House orphans try to navigate the outside world after successfully escaping their gilded cage.
