Villains can be some of the most memorable and compelling characters in anime. How did they become so evil? What are they striving for? Are they actually sympathetic in the end? 2019 had plenty of amazing villains worth analyzing, ranging from complete hate sinks to complex, relatable people who just happen to be on the opposing side. Let’s count down our favorites!
One day, a mysterious green light engulfed the Earth, transforming all humans into stone statues. When teen genius Senku finally breaks out of his petrification after 3720 years, he finds himself in a world devoid of modern society – buildings have crumbled to make way for lush, untamed forests, and the only humans are a small group of villagers who subsist on stone-age technology. With the help of his new friends and his near-limitless knowledge of science, Senku sets out of rebuild modern civilization one invention at a time.
We love our anime girls, especially those who take on the herculean task of being the protagonist of an entire show. From cute comedies to romances to thrillers, anime in 2019 starred some exceptional female leads who carried their shows with aplomb. Let’s celebrate them together by counting down our favorites!

Briana Lawrence (Brichibi Cosplays) and Jessica Walsh (SnowCosplays) are a cosplaying and writing couple known as Sewn Together Reflections. Briana is perhaps best known for her magical girl novel/comic hybrid MagnifiqueNOIR, which had its second book release recently, and Jessica spends much of her time creating cosplays to flatter all figures. They’re also freelance non-fiction writers as well as advocates for diversity in media and self-esteem with cosplay. We caught up with Briana and Jessica at Ohayocon 2020 to discuss how they met, how they get inspired, and much more!

This anime convention draws over 20,000 people to Columbus, Ohio to revel in all things nerdy for one fun-filled weekend in the doldrums of winter.
